The Qur’an on Jesus

Every passage of the Qur’an on Jesus and his teachings, with the headings and notes of the compilation. Each verse is numbered by chapter and verse. Many of them are set among the sections of The Gospel According to Islam.

Chapter 1: The Opening

Prayer for Guidance

1:1 In the Name of God—the Most Compassionate, Most Merciful.

1:2 All praise is for God—Lord of all worlds,1

1:3 the Most Compassionate, Most Merciful,

1:4 Master of the Day of Judgment.

1:5 You ˹alone˺ we worship and You ˹alone˺ we ask for help.

1:6 Guide us along the Straight Path,

1:7 the Path of those You have blessed—not those You are displeased with, or those who are astray.2

Chapter 2: The Cow

Jesus is a Messenger

2:87 Indeed, We3 gave Moses the Book and sent after him successive messengers. And We gave Jesus, son of Mary, clear proofs and supported him with the holy spirit4. Why is it that every time a messenger comes to you ˹Israelites˺ with something you do not like, you become arrogant, rejecting some and killing others?

God is In No Need of Children

2:116 They5 say, “God has offspring6.” Glory be to Him! In fact, to Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and the earth—all are subject to His Will.

2:117 ˹He is˺ the Originator of the heavens and the earth! When He decrees a matter, He simply tells it, “Be!” And it is!

One True God

2:255 God! There is no god ˹worthy of worship˺ except Him, the Ever-Living, All-Sustaining. Neither drowsiness nor sleep overtakes Him. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who could possibly intercede with Him without His permission? He ˹fully˺ knows what is ahead of them and what is behind them, but no one can grasp any of His knowledge—except what He wills ˹to reveal˺. His Seat encompasses the heavens and the earth, and the preservation of both does not tire Him. For He is the Most High, the Greatest.

Chapter 3: The Family of Imran

Birth of Mary

3:35 ˹Remember˺ when the wife of ’Imrân said, “My Lord! I dedicate what is in my womb entirely to Your service,7 so accept it from me. You ˹alone˺ are truly the All-Hearing, All-Knowing.”

3:36 When she delivered, she said, “My Lord! I have given birth to a girl,”—and God fully knew what she had delivered—“and the male is not like the female8. I have named her Mary, and I seek Your protection for her and her offspring from Satan, the accursed.”

3:37 So her Lord accepted her with good acceptance and caused her to grow in a good manner and put her in the care of Zachariah. Whenever Zachariah visited her in the sanctuary, he found her supplied with provisions. He exclaimed, “O Mary! Where did this come from?” She replied, “It is from God. Surely God provides for whoever He wills without limit.”

Birth of John the Baptist

3:38 Then and there Zachariah prayed to his Lord, saying, “My Lord! Grant me—by your grace— righteous offspring. You are certainly the Hearer of ˹all˺ prayers.”

3:39 So the angels called out to him while he stood praying in the sanctuary, “God gives you good news of ˹the birth of˺ John who will confirm the Word of God and will be a great leader, chaste, and a prophet among the righteous.”

3:40 Zachariah exclaimed, “My Lord! How can I have a son when I am very old and my wife is barren?” He replied, “So will it be. God does what He wills.”

3:41 Zachariah said, “My Lord! Grant me a sign.” He said, “Your sign is that you will not ˹be able to˺ speak to people for three days except through gestures. Remember your Lord often and glorify ˹Him˺ morning and evening.”

Mary Chosen over All Women

3:42 And ˹remember˺ when the angels said, “O Mary! Surely God has selected you, purified you, and chosen you over all women of the world.

3:43 O Mary! Be devout to your Lord, prostrate yourself ˹in prayer˺ and bow along with those who bow down.”

3:44 This is news of the unseen that We reveal to you ˹O Prophet˺. You were not with them when they cast lots to decide who would be Mary’s guardian, nor were you there when they argued ˹about it˺.

Good News of Jesus Christ

3:45 ˹Remember˺ when the angels proclaimed, “O Mary! God gives you good news of a Word9 from Him, his name will be the Messiah10, Jesus, son of Mary; honoured in this world and the Hereafter, and he will be one of those nearest ˹to God˺.

3:46 And he will speak to people in ˹his˺ infancy and adulthood and will be one of the righteous.”

3:47 Mary wondered, “My Lord! How can I have a child when no man has ever touched me?” An angel replied, “So will it be. God creates what He wills. When He decrees a matter, He simply tells it, ‘Be!’ And it is!

The Mission and Miracles of Jesus

3:48 And God will teach him the book and wisdom, the Torah and the Gospel,

3:49 and make him a messenger to the Children of Israel to proclaim, I have come to you with a sign from your Lord: I will make for you a bird from clay, breathe into it, and it will become a ˹real˺ bird—by God’s Will. I will heal the blind and the leper and raise the dead to life—by God’s Will. And I will prophesize what you eat and store in your houses. Surely in this is a sign for you if you ˹truly˺ believe.

3:50 And I will confirm the Torah revealed before me and legalize some of what had been forbidden to you. I have come to you with a sign from your Lord, so be mindful of God and obey me.

3:51 Surely God is my Lord and your Lord. So worship Him ˹alone˺. This is the Straight Path.’”

The Disciples

3:52 When Jesus sensed disbelief from his people, he asked, “Who will stand up with me for God?” The disciples replied, “We will stand up for God. We believe in God, so bear witness that we have submitted.”

3:53 ˹They prayed to God,˺ “Our Lord! We believe in Your revelations and follow the messenger, so count us among those who bear witness.”

Conspiracy Against Jesus

3:54 And the disbelievers made a plan ˹against Jesus˺, but God also planned—and God is the best of planners.

3:55 ˹Remember˺ when God said, “O Jesus! I will take you11 and raise you up to Myself. I will deliver you from those who disbelieve, and elevate your followers above the disbelievers until the Day of Judgment. Then to Me you will ˹all˺ return, and I will settle all your disputes.

3:56 As for those who disbelieve, I will subject them to a severe punishment in this life and the Hereafter, and they will have no helpers.

3:57 And as for those who believe and do good, they will be rewarded in full. And God does not like the wrongdoers.”

3:58 We recite ˹all˺ this to you ˹O Prophet˺ as one of the signs12 and ˹as˺ a wise reminder.

Jesus and Adam

3:59 Indeed, the example of Jesus in the sight of God is like that of Adam. He created him from dust, then said to him, “Be!” And he was!

3:60 This is the truth from your Lord, so do not be one of those who doubt.

Disputes over Jesus

3:61 Now, whoever disputes with you ˹O Prophet˺ concerning Jesus after full knowledge has come to you, say, “Come! Let us gather our children and your children, our women and your women, ourselves and yourselves—then let us sincerely invoke God’s curse upon the liars.”

3:62 Certainly, this is the true narrative, and there is no god ˹worthy of worship˺ except God. And indeed, God ˹alone˺ is the Almighty, All-Wise.

3:63 If they turn away, then surely God has ˹perfect˺ knowledge of the corruptors.

3:64 Say, O Prophet, “O People of the Book! Let us come to common terms: that we will worship none but God, associate none with Him, nor take one another as lords instead of God.” But if they turn away, then say, “Bear witness that we have submitted ˹to God alone˺.”

Distorting the Scripture

3:78 There are some among them who distort the Book with their tongues to make you think this ˹distortion˺ is from the Book—but it is not what the Book says. They say, “It is from God”—but it is not from God. And ˹so˺ they attribute lies to God knowingly.

Prophets Never Claim Divinity

3:79 It is not appropriate for someone who God has blessed with the Scripture, wisdom, and prophethood to say to people, “Worship me instead of God.” Rather, he would say, “Be devoted to the worship of your Lord ˹alone˺”—in accordance with what these prophets read in the Scripture and what they taught.

3:80 And he would never ask you to take angels and prophets as lords. Would he ask you to disbelieve after you have submitted?

Chapter 4: Woman

Jesus Was Neither Killed nor Crucified

4:157 And for boasting, “We killed the Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, the messenger of God.” But they neither killed nor crucified him—it was only made to appear so.13 Even those who argue for this ˹crucifixion˺ are in doubt. They have no knowledge whatsoever— only making assumptions. They certainly did not kill him.

4:158 Rather, God raised him up to Himself. And God is Almighty, All-Wise.

Do Not Say Trinity

4:170 O humanity! The Messenger has certainly come to you with the truth from your Lord, so believe for your own good. But if you disbelieve, then ˹know that˺ to God belongs whatever is in the heavens and the earth. And God is All-Knowing, All-Wise.

4:171 O People of the Book! Do not go to extremes regarding your faith; say nothing about God except the truth. The Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, was no more than a messenger of God and the fulfilment of His Word through Mary and a spirit ˹created by a command˺ from Him14. So believe in God and His messengers and do not say, “Trinity.” Stop!—for your own good. God is only One God. Glory be to Him! He is far above having a son! To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And God is sufficient as a Trustee of Affairs.

4:172 The Messiah would never be too proud to be a servant of God, nor would the angels nearest to God. Those who are too proud and arrogant to worship Him will be brought before Him all together.

4:173 As for those who believe and do good, He will reward them in full and increase them out of His grace. But those who are too proud and arrogant, He will subject them to a painful punishment. And besides God they will find no protector or helper.

Chapter 5: The Spread Table

A Clear Book from God

5:15 O People of the Book! Now Our Messenger (Muhammad) has come to you, revealing much of what you have hidden of the Scriptures and disregarding much. There certainly has come to you from God a light and a clear Book

5:16 through which God guides those who seek His pleasure to the ways of peace, brings them out of darkness and into light by His Will, and guides them to the Straight Path.

Jesus Is Not God

5:17 Indeed, those who say, “God is the Messiah, son of Mary,” have fallen into disbelief. Say, ˹O Prophet ˺ “Who has the power to prevent God if He chose to destroy the Messiah, son of Mary, his mother, and everyone in the world all together?” To God ˹alone˺ belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the earth and everything in between. He creates whatever He wills. And God is Most Capable of everything.

Children of God?

5:18 The Jews and the Christians each say, “We are the children of God and His most beloved!” Say, ˹O Prophet, ˺ “Why then does He punish you for your sins? No! You are only humans like others of His Own making. He forgives whoever He wills and punishes whoever He wills. To God ˹alone˺ belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the earth and everything in between. And to Him is the final return.”

One God, Not Three

5:72 Those who say, “God is the Messiah, son of Mary,” have certainly fallen into disbelief. The Messiah ˹himself˺ said, “O Children of Israel! Worship God— my Lord and your Lord.” Whoever associates others with God ˹in worship˺ will surely be forbidden Paradise by God. Their home will be the Fire. And the wrongdoers will have no helpers.

5:73 Those who say, “God is one in a Trinity,” have certainly fallen into disbelief. There is only One God. If they do not stop saying this, those who disbelieve among them will be afflicted with a painful punishment.

5:74 Will they not turn to God in repentance and seek His forgiveness? And God is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

Jesus Was Human, Not Divine

5:75 The Messiah, son of Mary, was no more than a messenger. ˹Many˺ messengers had ˹come and˺ gone before him. His mother was a woman of truth. They both ate food15. See how We make the signs clear to them, yet see how they are deluded ˹from the truth˺!

5:76 Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “How can you worship besides God those who can neither harm nor benefit you? And God ˹alone˺ is the All-Hearing, All-Knowing.”

5:77 Say, “O People of the Book! Do not go to extremes in your faith beyond the truth, nor follow the vain desires of those who went astray before ˹you˺. They misled many and strayed from the Right Way.”

Christians Who Are Sincere

5:82 You will surely find the most bitter towards the believers to be the Jews and polytheists and the most gracious to be those who call themselves Christian. That is because there are priests and monks among them and because they are not arrogant.

5:83 When they listen to what has been revealed to the Messenger, you see their eyes overflowing with tears for recognizing the truth. They say, “Our Lord! We believe, so count us among the witnesses.

5:84 Why should we not believe in God and the truth that has come to us? And we long for our Lord to include us in the company of the righteous.”

5:85 So God will reward them for what they said with Gardens under which rivers flow, to stay there forever. And that is the reward of the good-doers.

5:86 As for those who disbelieve and reject Our signs, they will be the residents of the Hellfire.

God’s Favour upon Jesus

5:110 And ˹on Judgment Day˺ God will say, “O Jesus, son of Mary! Remember My favour upon you and your mother: how I supported you with the holy spirit16 so you spoke to people in ˹your˺ infancy and adulthood. How I taught you writing, wisdom, the Torah, and the Gospel. How you moulded a bird from clay—by My Will—and breathed into it and it became a ˹real˺ bird—by My Will. How you healed the blind and the lepers—by My Will. How you brought the dead to life—by My Will. How I prevented the Children of Israel from harming you when you came to them with clear proofs and the disbelievers among them said, “This is nothing but pure magic.”

5:111 And how I inspired the disciples, “Believe in Me and My messenger!” They declared, “We believe and bear witness that we fully submit to God.”17

Miracle of the Table

5:112 ˹Remember˺ when the disciples asked, “O Jesus, son of Mary! Will your Lord be willing to send down to us a table spread with food from heaven?” Jesus answered, “Fear God if you are ˹truly˺ believers.”

5:113 They said, “We ˹only˺ wish to eat from it to reassure our hearts, to verify you are indeed truthful to us, and to become its witnesses.”

5:114 Jesus, son of Mary, prayed, “O God, our Lord! Send us from heaven a table spread with food as a feast for us—the first and last of us—and as a sign from You. Provide for us! You are indeed the Best Provider.”

5:115 God answered, “I am sending it down to you. But whoever among you denies afterwards will be subjected to a torment I have never inflicted on anyone of My creation.”

Jesus Denying Claim to Divinity

5:116 And ˹on Judgment Day˺ God will say, “O Jesus, son of Mary! Did you ever ask the people to worship you and your mother as gods besides God?” He will answer, “Glory be to You! How could I ever say what I had no right to say? If I had said such a thing, you would have certainly known it. You know what is hidden within me, but I do not know what is within You. Indeed, You ˹alone˺ are the Knower of all unseen.

5:117 I never told them anything except what You ordered me to say: “Worship God—my Lord and your Lord!” And I was witness over them as long as I remained among them. But when You took me,18 You were the Witness over them—and You are a Witness over all things.

5:118 If You punish them, they belong to You after all.19 But if You forgive them, You are surely the Almighty, All-Wise.”

5:119 God will declare, “This is the Day when ˹only˺ the faithful will benefit from their faithfulness. Theirs are Gardens under which rivers flow, to stay there for ever and ever. God is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him. That is the ultimate triumph.”

5:120 To God ˹alone˺ belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the earth and everything within. And He is Most Capable of everything.

Chapter 10: Jonah

The Quran is a Confirmation

10:37 It is not ˹possible˺ for this Quran to have been produced by anyone other than God. In fact, it is a confirmation of what came before, and an explanation of the Scripture. It is, without a doubt, from the Lord of all worlds.

10:38 Or do they claim, “He20 made it up!”? Tell them ˹O Prophet˺, “Produce one chapter like it then, and seek help from whoever you can—other than God—if what you say is true!”

God Has No Children

10:68 They21 say, “God has offspring.” Glory be to Him! He is the Self-Sufficient. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. You have no proof of this! Do you say about God what you do not know?

10:69 Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “Indeed, those who fabricate lies against God will never succeed.”

Chapter 19: Mary

Zachariah’s Prayer

19:2 ˹This is˺ a reminder of your Lord’s mercy to His servant Zachariah,

19:3 when he cried out to his Lord privately,

19:4 saying, “My Lord! Surely my bones have become brittle, and grey hair has spread across my head, but I have never been disappointed in my prayer to You, my Lord!

19:5 And I am concerned about ˹the faith of˺ my relatives after me, since my wife is barren. So grant me, by Your grace, an heir,

19:6 who will inherit ˹prophethood˺ from me and the family of Jacob, and make him, O Lord, pleasing ˹to You˺!”

Prayer Answered

19:7 ˹The angels announced,˺ “O Zachariah! Indeed, We give you the good news of ˹the birth of˺ a son, whose name will be John—a name We have not given to anyone before.”

19:8 He wondered, “My Lord! How can I have a son when my wife is barren, and I have become extremely old?”

19:9 An angel replied, “So will it be! Your Lord says, ‘It is easy for Me, just as I created you before, when you were nothing!’”

19:10 Zachariah said, “My Lord! Grant me a sign.” He responded, “Your sign is that you will not ˹be able to˺ speak to people for three nights, despite being healthy.”

19:11 So he came out to his people from the sanctuary, signalling to them to glorify ˹God˺ morning and evening.

John’s Noble Qualities

19:12 ˹It was later said,˺ “O John! Hold firmly to the Scriptures.” And We granted him wisdom while ˹he was still˺ a child,

19:13 as well as purity and compassion from Us. And he was God-fearing,

19:14 and kind to his parents. He was neither arrogant nor disobedient.

19:15 Peace be upon him the day he was born, and the day of his death, and the day he will be raised back to life!

Gabriel Visits Mary

19:16 And mention in the Book ˹O Prophet, the story of˺ Mary when she withdrew from her family to a place in the east,

19:17 screening herself off from them. Then We sent to her Our angel, ˹Gabriel,˺ appearing before her as a man, perfectly formed.

19:18 She appealed, “I truly seek refuge in the Most Compassionate from you! ˹So leave me alone˺ if you are God-fearing.”

19:19 He responded, “I am only a messenger from your Lord, ˹sent˺ to bless you with a pure son.”

19:20 She wondered, “How can I have a son when no man has ever touched me, nor am I unchaste?”

19:21 He replied, “So will it be! Your Lord says, ‘It is easy for Me. And so will We make him a sign for humanity and a mercy from Us.’ It is a matter ˹already˺ decreed.”

Birth of Jesus Christ

19:22 So she conceived him and withdrew with him to a remote place.

19:23 Then the pains of labour drove her to the trunk of a palm tree. She cried, “Alas! I wish I had died before this, and was a thing long forgotten!”

19:24 So a voice22 reassured her from below her, “Do not grieve! Your Lord has provided a stream at your feet.

19:25 And shake the trunk of this palm tree towards you, it will drop fresh, ripe dates upon you.

19:26 So eat and drink, and put your heart at ease. But if you see any of the people, say, ‘I have vowed silence23 to the Most Compassionate, so I am not talking to anyone today.’”

Reaction to Baby Jesus

19:27 Then she returned to her people, carrying him. They said ˹in shock˺, “O Mary! You have certainly done a horrible thing!

19:28 O sister of Aaron!24 Your father was not an indecent man, nor was your mother unchaste.”

19:29 So she pointed to the baby. They exclaimed, “How can we talk to someone who is an infant in the cradle?”

Baby Jesus Talks

19:30 Jesus declared, “I am truly a servant of God. He has destined me to be given the Scripture and to be a prophet.

19:31 He has made me a blessing wherever I go, and bid me to establish prayer and give alms-tax as long as I live,

19:32 and to be kind to my mother. He has not made me arrogant or defiant.

19:33 Peace be upon me the day I was born, the day I die, and the day I will be raised back to life!”

Christians Differ on Jesus

19:34 That is Jesus, son of Mary. ˹And this is˺ a word of truth, about which they dispute.

19:35 It is not for God to take a son! Glory be to Him. When He decrees a matter, He simply tells it, “Be!” And it is!

19:36 ˹Jesus also declared,˺ “Surely God is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him ˹alone˺. This is the Straight Path.”

19:37 Yet their ˹various˺ groups have differed among themselves ˹about him˺, so woe to the disbelievers when they face a tremendous Day!

God’s Son?

19:88 They25 say, “The Most Compassionate has offspring26.”

19:89 You have certainly made an outrageous claim,

19:90 by which the heavens are about to burst, the earth to split apart, and the mountains to crumble to pieces

19:91 in protest of attributing children to the Most Compassionate.

19:92 It does not befit ˹the majesty of˺ the Most Compassionate to have children.

19:93 There is none in the heavens or the earth who will not return to the Most Compassionate in full submission.

19:94 Indeed, He fully knows them and has counted them precisely.

19:95 And each of them will return to Him on the Day of Judgment all alone.

Chapter 21: The Prophets

Prophet Zachariah

21:89 And ˹remember˺ when Zachariah cried out to his Lord, “My Lord! Do not leave me childless, though You are the Best of Successors.”27

21:90 So We answered his prayer, granted him John, and made his wife fertile. Indeed, they used to race in doing good, and call upon Us with hope and fear, totally humbling themselves before Us.

Prophet Jesus and His Mother

21:91 And ˹remember˺ the one who guarded her chastity, so We breathed into her through Our angel, ˹Gabriel,˺28 making her and her son a sign for all peoples.

Chapter 43: Ornaments

Second Coming of Jesus

43:59 He (Jesus) was only a servant We showed favour to, and made as an example for the Children of Israel.

43:61 And his ˹second˺ coming is truly a sign for the Hour (Day of Resurrection). So have no doubt about it, and follow me. This is the Straight Path.

43:62 And do not let Satan hinder you, ˹for˺ he is certainly your sworn enemy.

The Truth About Jesus

43:63 When Jesus came with clear proofs, he declared, “I have come to you with wisdom, and to clarify to you some of what you differ about. So fear God, and obey me.

43:64 Surely God ˹alone˺ is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him ˹alone˺. This is the Straight Path.”

43:65 Yet their ˹various˺ groups have differed among themselves ˹about him˺, so woe to the wrongdoers when they face the torment of a painful Day!

Chapter 57: Iron

Jesus and his Followers

57:26 And indeed, We sent Noah and Abraham and reserved prophethood and revelation for their descendants. Some of them are ˹rightly˺ guided, while most are rebellious.

57:27 Then in the footsteps of these ˹prophets˺, We sent Our messengers, and ˹after them˺ We sent Jesus, son of Mary, and granted him the Gospel, and instilled compassion and mercy into the hearts of his followers. As for monasticism, they made it up—We never ordained it for them—only seeking to please God, yet they did not ˹even˺ observe it strictly. So We rewarded those of them who were faithful. But most of them are rebellious.

57:28 O people of faith! Fear God and believe in His Messenger. ˹And˺ He will grant you a double share of His mercy, provide you with a light to walk in ˹on Judgment Day˺, and forgive you. For God is All- Forgiving, Most Merciful.

Chapter 59: The Gathering

God’s Beautiful Names

59:22 “He is God—there is no god ˹worthy of worship˺ except Him: Knower of the seen and unseen. He is the Most Compassionate, Most Merciful.

59:23 He is God—there is no god except Him: the King, the Most Holy, the All-Perfect, the Source of Serenity, the Watcher ˹of all˺, the Almighty, the Supreme in Might, the Majestic. Glorified is God far above what they associate with Him ˹in worship˺!

59:24 He is God: the Creator, the Inventor, the Shaper. He ˹alone˺ has the Most Beautiful Names. Whatever is in the heavens and the earth ˹constantly˺ glorifies Him. And He is the Almighty, All-Wise.”

Chapter 61: The Ranks

Jesus Prophesied the Coming of Muhammad

61:6 And ˹remember˺ when Jesus, son of Mary, said, “O children of Israel! I am truly God’s messenger to you, confirming the Torah which came before me, and giving good news of a messenger after me whose name will be Aḥmad29.” Yet when the Prophet came to them with clear proofs, they said, “This is pure magic.”

61:7 Who does more wrong than the one who fabricates lies about God when invited to submit30 ˹to Him˺? For God does not guide the wrongdoing people.

Chapter 112: Purity of Faith

God’s Absolute Oneness

112:1 Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “He is God, One ˹and Indivisible˺;

112:2 God—the Sustainer, needed by all.

112:3 He has never had offspring, nor was He born.

112:4 And there is none comparable to Him.”
